With a flamingo pink neon lit sign encouraging viewers to “Work like a Captain, Party like a Pirate”, The Captain & Crew Café Restaurant certainly knows how to turn a head or two!
My ongoing ‘on-the-way-to-work’ quest to find a coffee to fill my #reusablecup led me here, on the recommendation of a work colleague.
Just a stone’s throw from the waters edge on Lake Macquarie, this family owned and operated casual nook makes you feel like you’re at a friends place the second you walk in.
Opening in January 2019, the vision was about “blurring the lines between Café & Restaurant”. Describing the vibe as elevated casual dining, the modern menu covers breakfast and lunch classics through to share plates and changeable mains and blackboard specials.
And it’s not just coffee to accompany your meal – there is a solid selection of cocktails, craft beer & cider and a few cracking wines to while away an hour or two.
With frontage-wide open windows and bar seating, diners can watch the world go by in a relaxed setting inside or out. Afterwards, there’s always the option of a stroll along the lake’s edge to wear off some of the food or beverage indulgences…
…like the Turkish spiced chicken burger with cucumber, tomato, lettuce with beetroot hummus and middle eastern seasonal sweet potato fries. Which brazenly stared at me from the specials board, causing tummy rumbles as I waited for my takeaway coffee…
Speaking of which, the Captain and Crew were the first café in Lake Macquarie to choose coffee from Will & Co Culture of Coffee. Located in Bondi Beach, these guys know how to create a vibe and it shows in their coffee.
The Eight-O-Eight blend served by the Crew is of Guatemalan & Brazilian origin. I found it smooth with a cheeky acid middle and deep treacle finish.
There’s a good range of milk alternative faves. I had the Minor Figures Oat Milk in this morning’s latte. Happy Happy Soy Boy, Milk Lab Almond Milk and Macamilk Byron Bay Macadamia Milk all live here too.
Getting back to the menu – I spied this thing called a “Bottomless Lunch”. I checked it out online and it’s a set of shares and drinks that have piqued my interest.
That’s what I love about these morning coffee jaunts – discovering places to come back to and The Captain & Crew Café Restaurant at Marks Point is definitely one of them.
Bye for now
